Tony Sweet LRPS, DPAGB, APAGB

(1939-2012)

Tony Sweet passed away in Papworth Hospital on 18th April 2012 after a progressive respiratory illness. His funeral and thanksgiving service took place at the Cambridge Crematorium on 27th April.

Tony had a life-long passion for photography. Though taking photographs and producing prints whether in the darkroom or via computer was quite central to his interest, his efforts went far beyond just image-making. His training as an engineer meant that he was meticulous – planning and attention to detail went hand-in-hand for Tony. As a result, he was quickly pressed into service on various committees and interest groups.

He first joined a camera club in 1955 when he enrolled as a member of Edmonton Camera Club. He quickly took on various roles and helped to organize the North London Salon of Pictorial Photography. His contribution over a number of years was recognized by being elected as an Honorary Vice President for the club.

PRINTS FOR ALL

Your Club Secretary will hopefully have already received the publicity poster and mentioned the “Prints for All” Event taking place on Sunday 7th November. You will possibly notice that due to catering problems at the Latton Bush Centre, Harlow it has been necessary at fairly short notice, to change the venue to Whittlesford Memorial Hall (near Duxford). Our Speakers on that occasion are:-

Christine and Don Langford both LRPS CPAGB APAGB (Don is currently President of the PAGB) with “Images by Accident” – monochrome and colour prints. Don and Christine first met at Potters Bar and District Photographic Society in 1984, continuing their interest in photography when they moved to North Wales in 1990. Don’s says his first love was darkroom photography but they both embraced digital a few years ago and continue to learn about Photoshop. Most of their pictures are taken on holidays – favourite destinations being France, Venice and the Lake District, which will no doubt be evident in their talk.

After Lunch Barry Mead FRPS EFIAP MPAGB will show us some stunning images from his “Wild Encounters”. Colour prints of wildlife from Namibia, Zambia, USA, Falkland Islands and the UK. Barry has had numerous Exhibitions and in 1991 was awarded the RPS Fenton Medal and Honorary Membership of the RPS.. His work ranges from Wildlife, Landscape and very creative, Computer constructed images with the majority of his photographic awards gained for his Wildlife pictures.

Finally Libby Smith MPAGB EFIAP will show us her “Altered Images” with prints from slides and Digital Photos. Libby will bring us images created using Photoshop – some with little appearance of manipulation, others with a lot. Photoshop has allowed her to go full circle back to her art roots and put an original slant on many of her prints, helped along by Permajet’s range of Fine Art Papers, which she finds compliments her styles well -  whether an atmospheric landscape or a complex composite image using multiple layers and blending modes to create the end print. Libby has also gained many awards all over the world.

Application forms for tickets will be available to download as well. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the work of some superb photographers from outside our region, who normally live too far away to visit our region on a Club evening and please book early – it saves me a lot of worry!. Taking the opportunity to see such work is one of the best ways to be inspired and learn more.

PDI Club Championship Report

12th February 2012

Best PDI: 'Ocean scene' by Malcolm Bumstead of Beyond Group

EAF members awoke to snow and ice on 12th February but that did not deter them from coming from all parts of East Anglia to the Latton Bush Centre, Harlow to see this year's PDI Championship.

There were 38 participating clubs – we saw 570 images in Round One and 100 images in Round Two. The three judges, Colin Harrison, Graham Hodgkiss and David E Gibbins had the job of scoring the images during the day. The images were varied and imaginative with some excellent work from the clubs. If you didn’t come, you missed a treat.

Whilst there was no cafeteria available the new coffee shop was an excellent place to go for a drink and a snack and had a variety of seating which helped to create an impression.

Updated Events Diary

Unfortunately, one or two gremlins crept into the production of the printed Events Diary recently distributed to clubs as hard copy. Please find an updated version on the Downloadable Documents page. Please print this out and replace existing copies on club notice boards with this revised version. Thank you.

Plagiarism in Photography

Plagiarism continues to be a major issue in club photography whether this be deliberate or by inexperienced photographers not fully understanding what is ethical and permissable in exhibitions and competitions. Christine Widdall AFIAP DPAGB BPE3, President of the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union (L&CPU) has produced an excellent article that provides a clarification of this tricky area. With Christine's permission, we have made this is available from the Downloadable Documents page on this web site. Please bring this to the attention of your competition secretary and perhaps even review your own club's competition rules to ensure that they make clear what is acceptable. Plagiarism is treated seriously by the EAF and all other federations and photographic organisations - the penalties are severe, and rightly so, and they may affect a club as well as the individual concerned so be warned.
